Background

Life Alert is a nationwide company that provides emergency response devices to the elderly who might be at risk of falling and injuring themselves. While Life Alert Emergency Response is one of the biggest companies in this market, there are other competitors and similar services offered. Life Alert's current system is worn around the neck as a pendant. In case of a fall, the user would have to push a button which would alert the company and provide emergency response to the injured.

A major pitfall of the current devices, however, is that if the user is injured and unable to push the button or access their device, no help will be provided, possibly resulting in death. Creating a device that employs an accelerometer will eliminate the need for user activation. An accelerometer is an electromechanical device that measures forces of acceleration. The most common place an accelerometer is employed is in a mobile phone (to play games that require the phone to be tilted).
